It arrived in a dented up box.
Miraculously, only the Makita label was scraped when I opened the box.
I'm just happy Makita isn't in the moving business. They know nothing about packing and shipping. This machine needs to be crated, no way around it. Cardboard is not up to the task.
ANYWAY. The compressor is awesome. It's reasonably quiet, and so far I've tested with a 16g, a 18g, and a crown stapler. I also used a cheapo cutting wheel with it, and it actually had enough capacity to do a larger cut, and kept going pretty well when the compressor kicked on.
The wheels. Well guys, they're plastic cr@p. The good news is they can be replaced with minimal effort, and a trip to the mower shop for parts. If you CAN'T replace them yourself, you probably shouldn't be buying a tool like this anyway. I still have the originals on, but I picked up a a set of metal hub/solid rubber with caps for later on. At the price I got it at, including shipping, I'm not going to write off the tool because I had to spend $10 to upgrade it.
I certainly didn't really need this much power, and probably could have made do with one of the Porter Cable combo specials, but I don't like to bring a knife to a gunfight. I'm going to be doing some deck work soon, and I wanted something that would drive a framing nailer without flinching. I think I made the right choice.
If you're reading this Mr. Makita, besides the wheels, the one cool thing that I would like to see on this tool is a hose reel. There is enough room to mount a hose reel on the back of the handle. As soon as I get a chance to see my friend the welder, I may add one myself.

I purchased the MAC5200, after reading all the reviews - including several very negative ones...
To offset those - here is mine.
The shipment arrived in a pristine carton - by UPS.
The compressor was pristine in every way - not a scratch or blemish.
The unpack, setup and initial no pressure break in procedure took less that 30 minutes. The compressor performed flawlessly.
This compressor is SO much better and smaller than those I had in the past, I was shocked.
This lubricated 3hp is much quieter than my former unlubricated 2.5hp, and puts out more air at the higher pressures PSI.
For harry homeowner, it doesn't get much better than this.
It's compact, with sufficient space under cover to store fittings, gages, etc, four corner hooks to handle 50' of air hose and two front hook to hang either a second shorter hose or a couple of air tools.
Handle can be folded down, to put unit into a car trunk, or under a shop table - and STILL BE FUNCTIONAL in the handle down mode.
I haven't tried all my tools with this compressor, but it did drive my biggest air hog with no problem at all.
Since my compressor will spend 95% of the time in my garage or nearby - I don't anticipate any wheel breakage problem - even though the wheels are plastic injection molded.
All things considered - Price, Compressor output, built in features, compactness, portability and all controls including easy to use ball valve drain cock accessible from the front -- this compressor delivered for ~ $300 is a very good buy.

Bought this in Jan of '08 through Amazon with Super Saver shipping. No damage at all and arrived within 3 business days of my order. After 30 days, I'm VERY HAPPY and this this compressor is BUILT SOLID. After shopping similar DeWalt Emglo and Ingersoll Rand products in person, the Makita had slightly better output numbers than the I.R. "double hotdog" it compares to on paper (that Amazon stocks) and the hardware, finish and logical layout of the Makita beat the DeWalt single hotdog style the home improvement center guys stock for over $60 net less cost after tax. I wanted an oiled compressor (call me old school) for longevity. The details are right on this one like the storage box built in (key for all the fittings, air hose, tire gauge, etc. and the nice details like plastic coated ends to the air hose hooks are the best I could find after shopping the "big box" home improvement guys. I also suggest shopping for Ingersoll Rand part kits that would go with it. They seem more "substantial" and some of the smaller E-stores within the Amazon site have great deals on quality fittings like this. Don't necessarily jump on the first links that pop up! I'm running 10 3" nails before each recharge cycle using a single framing nailer (this compressor is overkill for it). I also plan to use it for sandblasting old tractor implements as it has enough SCFM to do the job.
On the downside, the unit is heavier by 10lbs or so than comparable single hot dog compressors, but it wheels around easy and fits through and turns in tight spaces. I'm a fairly strong dude, and it's still a load to carry up and down stairs. I also noticed the tools drawer-lid vibrated a bit (was actually the loudest part), but after putting a couple of $.02 stick-on felt pads on the top of the bin where the lid rests (used for sliding furniture on hardwood floors) and this machine is now quiet enough to work with under my workbench. You know it's there, but it's not loud or constant noise.
In summary, solid product with a convenient, tax-free sale. Nice job Amazon!

I've been using this compressor for 1 year now. Though some of the early reviews mentioned shipping and wheel damage, I had no such experience. Like many of the newer reviews, it arrived in fine shape so I suspect that the packaging has evolved over time.
Initially I bought it to work on a truck with some serious air-sucking impact wrenches. If you're in a closed garage, it can be loud if you're close. Generally it is located across the garage from me, and I just let a 3/8" air hose lie across the garage floor.
Performance has always been spectacular. I suspect I will never need another compressor.

Just received my Mac5200 unit and happy to report that all my worries concerning shipping damages were euphorically put to rest. I wanted to order this unit for some time but kept deferring purchase because of the damage reports.
My unit was shipped out of Allentown, PA via DHL - that's right DHL (I still can't believe it). Although it was boxed in cardboard both the box and unit were undamaged. There were two minor blemishes to the paint on the tank but nothing to even be concerned with.
Kudos to DHL - box was in showroom condition - great job. Same to Amazon if they have changed carrier to solve shipping problems.
Now to the unit - awesome!!! A container of compressor oil was included - filled the oil reserve and went to "initial startup procedure" on page 10 of owner's manual. Was somewhat confused by Step 1 - open the "air receiver's drain value". What the %^*& is a air receiver's drain value??? I know what the Drain Valve or Cock at the bottom of the tank is - but was I missing something? A fast call to Makita's service center confirmed to open drain valve on tank for the no-load break in. Other than that all was fine.
Unit is heavier than appears and the noise level is impressively quietier than expected (at least in my garage for the break-in period).
I think I'll be very pleased with this compressor if everything remains as positive as the initial impressions. Oh, almost forget to add my comments on the wheels. The actual tires are not plastic as I thought from reading some reviews. Mine are rubber of some type, although not inflatable. The wheels or spokes sound plastic when tapped but these can easily be replaced if needed.
My initial impressions are ALL favorable. Just wished I hadn't waited so long or worried so much. I would request DHL for carrier.
6.) Good specs for the price range

I chose this portable unit because of the 6.5 cfm at 13.8 amp draw, collapsible cart, oil lubed pump, good air filter and ball valve drain. Did not find many other compressors in this price range with those specs and did not want to pay $600+ for a monster. The manual says it has a 50% duty cycle so if you need a compressor that will run without stopping look elsewhere.
On arrival the box had major rips and crushed areas fairly typical of my experiences of UPS shipment with heavy items. However, the unit itself was in good shape. The wheels seem to be ok, if they break they are easy to replace or Makita may have changed their construction. The noise level was what I would expect, maybe a little less than the 6.2 cfm Ridgid my buddy uses on the job. The cut in/ cut out pressures were a little low so a quick adjustment took care of that. The regulator worked fine and seemed to be more precise than some I have used. Oil level sight glass and easy drain location are a plus. I have not yet put the unit through the day to day punishment of jobsite use but I expect it will still be running strong years from now.

The Makita MAC 5200 is a well designed product, easy to maneuver on the ground with folding handle, hooks for hose storage, two handles on each side for lifting, and a storage compartment for smaller items, which is a real plus.
As to the wheels, I see no problem with mine (bought compressor in 4/07). Yes, they have a plastic center, but the tire itself is at least 1/2" solid rubber and will probably outlast the compressor.
A very careful inspection revealed no shipping damage. There was some shroud vibration on startup, quit after the 20 min. break in period.
I am very happy with the compressor and would buy an other one without hesitation.

I'm thinking this will be a great compressor for me. I am a "harry homeowner", as referred to by another review. I need to run my small nail gun, use a blow gun to clean things, and fill tires. I'm hoping that this unit will run an impact gun, if I need to in the future, and maybe run a small, portable sand blast unit.
I have used it twice in the last 3 days - filled a tire and ran my nail gun. So far, so good. I am impressed with the short amount of time it takes to re-pressurize. I have been using a 1.5 gallon Campbell-Hausfeld for several years. It ran my nail gun pretty well, but took SOOOO long to refill. I think I burnt the brushes out of the motor and haven't fixed it yet. This Makita is a huge step up for me. I looked at a number of units before buying this one. My decisions were based on price and not wanting to get another oil-less compressor. The specs on this also won me over - the rated 3 hp and the CFM ratings. The math in my head said this is a powerful compressor compared to a 20 gallon that has a 1 or 1.5 hp motor. I do realize that 20 gallons at the same pressure as 5 has it's benefits, but all around I think it is a good choice for me.
I like the way the unit is designed. I like the storage compartment, the hangers for hose and tools, the rubber handles that are strategically placed, and the fact that it is heavy and well built.
I read all of the reviews before I decided. Mine was delivered by UPS. It had a large tear in the box but no damage to the unit there. The paint on the ends of the tank and the front "rollbar" are scuffed some from rubbing againt the cardboard box. No big deal. Yes, they could probably put more packing in, but they did not use styrofoam( good choice for the environment ). So far, the wheels are okay. I am not impressed with anyone who puts cheapo wheels on something that needs to be rugged. I feel for the people who have to change the wheels when they use this tool everday "in the field".
So far, so good. I may write another review later after some time using it.

I purchased the Makita MAC5200 to blow-out (winterize) my underground sprinkler system. I have 6 zones with my longest run about 400 feet with 6 Hunter rotary heads. The compressor worked great and saved me $95. With the accessories and fittings I purchased at Lowes to make an adaptor it will pay for itself in 4 years. It takes about 75 seconds for the tank to recover from each use. You get from 45 to 30 seconds of air time and it took 4 to 6 times to completely blow out each zone. The compressor is very well built.

I am completely satisfied with this compressor.
Recovery is VERY quick. I use it for finish work, and it recovers fast. The only complaint I have, and it is very minor, is it is a little front heavy when you wheel it due to the length of the compressor protruding from the handle. But it's still not that bad, I just needed to find something.
Not complaining about the wheels either, but when it comes time to replace it, I'll get rubber wheels for it.
I thought about the DeWalt compressor, but heard from others outside of amazon it's not that great, and they like my Makita better and wish they had bought it.
By the way, the hose storage, and the storage compartment on it are nice complements, and great for storing nails and accessories. Having an oiled unit should make it last longer. I had a sealed unit before, didn't last all that long.
Pass on the DeWalt and buy this one.

I just wanted to say that this compressor has been a very reliable product. I have had absolutely no problems with it, it runs well, recovers just as fast as day one, and as far as the solid hard rubber wheels? they have held up, very well and have shown no signs of wear whatsoever, even after a year or so of usage...and of course, you never need to air them, so not so bad of an idea there... even after wheeling it over rough terrain and in and out of many sites they have held up very well and it is ver easy to wheel.
Get this one, you will be completely satisfied.

I've owned this compressor for almost a year, and have had ZERO problems with any aspect of it. It's quiet, and quite hard-working. The most amazing thing I discovered was that--after sitting in storage for 3-4 months during the winter--I went to use it yesterday, and was surprised when the motor didn't turn on. As I looked more closely, I could see that there was still pressure in the tank form my last use, enough that it didn't have to compress any air...at 110 psi!

I am very happy with this compressor. I installed it in the rafters in my garage and ran an iron pipe down the wall for compressed air without the compressor-on-the-floor clutter.
I will note that the wheels now have a steel hub, and should not crack as commented in the previous reviews. I don't use it mobile, so don't know for sure.
I have run the usual small air tools as well as the ultimate compressor workout: a die grinder. Of course, this compressor cannot keep up with an air hog like that. But it works admirably for occasional use of high CFM tools. When I have a need to use a big tool I am careful not run the compressor 100% duty cycle for hours on end. I have occasionally run it for 20 - 30 minutes at a stretch 100% before giving it a break.
It is perfect for my needs. I really like the small size. Big compressor (were talking 120V 20A here) performance in a small size. If you need to run a sandblaster, regular use of a die grinder, sander, etc, you should not even be looking at 120V single-cylinder compressors. Yes even those with a Big Tank ;)

I was aware of the issues that others have had regarding the way it was received, the tire issues, and the noise, so I did have a few concerns. It was deliverd by UPS and there was a tear in the cardboard box, but there is an air compressor inside, there was no damage to the compressor itself. Unpacked it and added oil, ran it for the break-in time, it is definitely quieter than I expected, I can actually hear over it in my garage. Closed the tank drain and it built up 140 psi of pressure in a few minutes, so far it looks like it is just what I wanted.

I agree with the wheel gripes. The wheels are injection molded with a very thin plastic, one of mine had a slash in it and collapsed on first use.
So, I went up to farm and fleet and bought two new wheels with steel center and solid rubber, heavy tread, put them on and it is perfectly mobile over any terrain, now.
I also agree Makita fudges on the specs.
Most important though is the performance in use, and there, it shines. I've used similar double tank units from other manufacturers and much prefer the design of this unit. It stores connectors and a hose, handle breaks down for storage/transport, It is made very well and is quiet for a unit this size.
It does draw power on the initial kick on, as they all do. I'd hoped to run this on my Yamaha 2500 watt generator, which is equivelant to a 20 amp circuit, but no go. It blows the breaker everytime. And the Yamaha runs a portable DeWalt table saw, jet 1200cfm dust collector and a chop saw just fine (not all at the same time!)
So, while it is not perfect, it is a good performer and I'm very satisfied with the comressor at the cost.

My MAC5200 made a lot of racket when I first started it. I shut it down and checked it over, then tryed again. More racket until I put my hand on the compressor unit. It got quiet. Checking some more, I found that there were no mounting bolts to mount the compressor to the frame. I called Makita and they couldn't believe it. I could hardly believe it myself. They sent the four bolts to me overnight. I couldn't get them in because of the plastic heat shield. Its holes didn't line up properly, but the holes are not critical to holding the heat shield in place, so I burned the holes bigger with a soldiering iron. After that the bolts went in easily. Now my MAC5200 purrs sweetly. I love it. I have not had a problem with the wheels on my machine. It pumps the tank to 150 psi in about two minutes and will hold the pressure overnight with little if any leakage. I run roofing and framing nail guns and other air tools with it. People that whine about the weight , noise and such must not study the specs as that's all in there.Anyway I bought the compresser reconditioned and it arrived via fed ex with the box showing some damage which is less than the train wreck expected from UPS. The box was heavy cardboard but inside there was about no reinforcement to protect the tool. The only thing preventing total destruction was the rugged design of the tool itself, which was mostly unharmed save bunches of paint chipped off the handles and one wheel which was not only off the tool but the rim was seperated from the tire! Well it was a recon so the paint is no biggie but the wheel is inexcusable and not worth blaming on the shipper. Hey, did I mention I needed this thing for work? All the mechanics seemed good so I fired up for the break in and set about pounding and prying the miserable excuse for a wheel back to some semblence of function. The compresser itself has been a joy to use on the job and my only regret is I didn't do this a long time ago. However others have pointed out the pathetic wheels and packing going back far enough for the Makita folks to have straightened this out way before now. The version I got has better wheels than described but if I was dragging it around a job site I would replace them with steel/pnumentaic wheels. As a shop compressor where you move it as needed it works very well indeed. As a stationary for a small shop it is fine. As a job site compressor where it is moved around it is not my first or even third choice (even replacing the wheels). A gas compressor is much more practical and the very high current draw of this unit limits the real extension cord length and effective portability. The version I got starts at 110psi and stops at 140. Drives a framing nailer and a UFO screw nailer just fine. There seems to be a possible issue with shut off but unless it is real and I have warintee problems I am satisfied. Well the auto shutoff no longer does. Their tech was helpful but they only get the same totally useless manual that the users do. They recently switched to Eagle for their compressors. They apparently don't make any compressors but just re-brand. I may change my rating depending on service that I get.
BTW don't count on service even in metro areas. There is no service in Colorado Springs, nearest Makita depot is Denver and they can have a 2 week delay while they order parts.
The unit folds nicely and fits in the back of a small SUV. At 100+ lbs its a little heavy to horse round routinely. The tool compartment is OK for storing connectors and adapters but not much else. You need access to all 6 sides of the compressor unless you don't use the handles.
Th version I got is loud but quieter than most compressors with similar CFM delivery (6 cfm @ 90 psi). Plenty to drive most air tools other then the large industrial type (will not come close to driving my 1" impact wrench, 10cfm@100psi).
Overall a excellent unit for the money. Yes there are better compressors but not close for the money.

I purchased this tool in June, 2008. It arrived from Amazon in perfect condition. After the initial 'break-in' period I used it a few times for minor chores around the shop. No problems. The problems began when I took it outside. For a machine this heavy it has lousy plastic wheels which not only bent out of shape, the axle they ride on also bent. I am not abusive with my tools and take reasonable care when handling them. Also, one of the plastic gauge covers cracked. In addition, the plastic shroud that goes over the compressor rattles like crazy and probably makes twice as much noise as this machine needs to make. Simply an observation of mine of poor design. But the real problem was the way in which Makita service treats you when you need help. The parts to replace were simple to swap out, and relatively inexpensive. The service rep I spoke with wanted me to drive this compressor 60 miles each way to have an authorized service center look at them to determine whether they "really failed" or not. In the past if I had a problem with heavy equipment that was easily repaired at my end the parts would be shipped free of charge, assuming the item was under warranty (it is). The rep further argued with me that the wheels simply "wore out" from usage. I explained to him I hadn't used this tool for more than a total of 20 hours and that that was an unreasonable assumption regarding the wheels. His next argument was that "Makita only warrants the motor on these tools and the rest is up to me - at my expense, to have repaired." Unbelievable. The warranty clearly states the entire tool is warranted for one year. Makita's have always made good tools in the past, but I would strongly recommend you look elsewhere if considering this tool, or any other from Makita. Their service center is abysmal. I can understand them not having the sharpest tacks handling the phone calls. But at least know your products and their respective warranties. No more Makita tools in this shop. This was a poor choice on my part.

My unit arrived in fine condition (box was not damaged either) as some report. I also don't have any problem with the wheels like some reviewers, but I rarely move the unit. My biggest beefs are this unit is extraordinarily loud, to the point where I now use it as little as possible. The tank is small too, and the unit cycles on constantly, although that's not an issue I can fault. It's also requires oil, and remembering to check and top off is a bother, although a small one. To recap, I can't complain about the unit's tank size or the fact that it requires oil--I knew what I was buying--but those are considerations if you're considering buying an AC, nonetheless. It seems awfully well made, which is really about all the good I can say about it. I regret buying it--I was swayed in part by the reviews here and I was not as informed about these things as I thought. A bit wiser and sadder, I don't think most of the reviewers know what they're talking about and are merely looking to rationalize their purchase.
37.) POOR PERFORMER PERIOD!

I have been a carpenter for 15 years and have used alot of different compressors. This compressor is far to heavy and loud for the performance it puts out. The pressure drops too low before the motor kicks in and the wheels are too small for maneuvering jobsites. I have alot of makita tools I am happy with, but this is poorly designed and built tool.
38.) If I had to do it again it would not be my first choice.

I too have several Makita tools and have been very happy with them. This does not live up to the Makita name. It is very loud and pressure does drop considerably before turning back on. My biggest disapointment though was the wheels. You would think that something that takes a beating and is heavy would have nice steardy wheels. Not in this case. They used cheap plastic wheels, I broke one the first day I used it. If I had to do it all over again I would have gone with the Porter Cable. It comes with Pneumatic Wheels and costs less. Live and learn I guess. Will definetly rethink further Makita purchases.
39.) Big disappointment.

I've been a diehard Makita fan for years. However, I was extremely disappointed with this compressor. Within a couple of days, one of the wheels snapped (during normal use). Within a few months, the replacement for that wheel and the other wheel broke, both pivots for the locking levers on the handle sheared off, and the cooling fan worked itself loose and began eating at the housing.
This compressor DOES NOT work on most 15 amp circuits; it just hums and sounds as if it's about to burn up. I comes from the factory with a low pressure setting. So if you're using a framing gun, it doesn't kick back on in time to have continuous nailing. There are adjustment screws for this inside the switch box, but that should not be necessary.
Overall, I think Makita should go back to the drawing board on this one or risk losing many long-time customers.
40.) Hunk of Junk

Man did I have problems with this unit. I received the first one, which had one wheel with a flat spot on it and the other wobbled so bad I thought it may fall off. Amazon was great and shipped me another unit immediately!(thanks for the great sevice Amazon). The second unit arrived. I took it out of the box and still was disappointed with the wheels. I decided to go ahead and make it work. I brought the unit to my shop and plugged it in. It ran for about 5 seconds and sparks flew out the side of the unit. I sent it back for a refund. I figured with the Makita name, I would be buying a quality tool. Was I ever wrong. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!
41.) Specs

What's with the 3 Horsepower rating? 13.8 Amps at 120 Volts = 1656 Watts. 1656 Watts x 0.00134 = 2.22 Horsepower. There are always some losses at the motor so it is impossible to get more than 2 horsepower optimistically. Why the misleading spec? Makes me wonder what else is misleading about the specs? 1.5 - 2 HP is good for a portable. Why not call it for what it is?
42.) Don't Do It

Just received mine.
One of the wheels was shattered.
The compressor crankcase has a huge crack in it.
The compressor crankcase mounting lugs are also shattered.
Can't get Amazon to reply to my requests for a refund or exchange. Compressor is sitting out in my garage leaking an oil slick all over.
